Record-Breaking Rickelton Powers MI Cape Town to Back-to-Back Wins Over JSK

Mumbai: Ryan Rickelton delivered a historic performance as defending champions MI Cape Town returned to winning ways with a commanding 36-run victory over Joburg Super Kings in the Betway SA20 ‘El Clasico’ at the Wanderers.

Rickelton etched his name into the record books by becoming the first batter to score multiple centuries in Betway SA20 history. He remained unbeaten on a scintillating 113 off 60 balls, smashing eight fours and nine sixes, as MI Cape Town piled up a formidable 234 for 3. The total proved more than enough after disciplined bowling spells from George Linde (2/30) and Kagiso Rabada (2/34) restricted JSK to 198 for 5.

Opening partner Rassie van der Dussen set the tone with a blistering 65 off just 32 deliveries, including four fours and six sixes. The duo revived memories of their famous 200-run stand from two seasons ago, putting together a rapid 129-run opening partnership in only 10.2 overs.

Although Nicholas Pooran and Jason Smith could not fully cash in on the strong platform, Rickelton ensured the momentum was not lost. He accelerated brilliantly, taking on Nandre Burger with successive boundaries and a towering six to reach his century in just 55 balls. Karim Janat provided late support with a quickfire 20 not out off 11 balls.

Joburg Super Kings’ chase suffered an early setback as captain Faf du Plessis was unable to bat. Michael Pepper was promoted to open but his debut innings was short-lived after Rabada overturned an on-field decision with a successful review in the third over. Rabada and Linde then struck in the Powerplay to remove Matthew de Villiers and Wiaan Mulder, leaving JSK under pressure.

A fighting 66-run partnership between James Vince and youngster Dian Forrester briefly revived JSK’s hopes. Vince top-scored with 77 off 43 balls before his dismissal swung the momentum back in MI Cape Town’s favour. Forrester continued the resistance with an impressive unbeaten 80 off 42 balls, but the target ultimately proved too steep.

Rickelton was named Player of the Match, securing over 83% of the fan vote ahead of Rabada, van der Dussen and Vince.

Brief Scores:
MI Cape Town 234/3 (20 overs)
Joburg Super Kings 198/5 (20 overs)
